Fate has been both kind and cruel to Halle Berry during the 33 years of her life. At no time has that been more evident than in the year 2000, which has seen the actress at the height and depth of her popularity. Berry, undoubtedly, has been blessed with beauty and talent. She boasts an impressive resume of screen credits, including her starring role in the HBO movie Introducing Dorothy Dandridge, for which she earned a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Award earlier this year. She also stars in the current film X-Men, based on the popular comic book series, as the mutant superheroine Storm. And she has found new love and bliss with her fiance, handsome R&B singer Eric Benet, and his 8-year-old daughter, India.

Halle already has enjoyed success and happiness beyond most people's wildest dreams. But she also has faced her fair share of dark times. As the daughter of a Black man and White woman, Berry has endured the stigma and rejection that often comes from being a person of mixed heritage. She also has dealt with the pain of growing up with an absentee father.

Berry has battled diabetes since her diagnosis with the disease in 1989, gone through a painful divorce from baseball star David Justice, and has even tried to take her own life. Through it all, the lovely star always seems to come out stronger and wiser in the end.

But her latest test of human endurance, a serious car accident she was involved in this past February and the resulting felony hit-and-run charge she faced for leaving the accident scene, proved one of her toughest, challenging Berry on every level.

"Sometimes I wonder just how strong I really am," Halle revealed to EBONY magazine. "And this accident put everything I had to the test." According to police, Berry was driving a rented sport utility vehicle that ran a red light and collided with another car at a West Hollywood intersection at 2:30 A.M. on Feb. 23, then drove off without exchanging information with the driver or calling the police.

Berry suffered a deep gash to her forehead that took some 20 stitches to close while the driver of the other vehicle suffered a broken wrist. Berry says that try as she might to remember the collision, she has "not a clue how I got from driving from my friend's house to being a bloody mess with a crashed car," EBONY reported.

Even harder for Berry herself to understand is why she left the accident scene, and how she could even drive herself home considering the state she was in.

"I know people find it hard to believe because I couldn't believe it, and it happened to me," she told EBONY. "I was filled with more whys and hows than anybody because I had to live through it and explain it. I would sit for hours and hours hoping and praying that something would jog my memory."

Doctors have told Berry that her behavior after the accident and her memory loss is not uncommon with head injuries. "Football players get banged in the head and then go on to play a whole game because it's over-learned behavior," Berry explained to In Style magazine.

"Driving the two blocks to my house, that's overlearned behavior for me."
